We work with clients to adapt to climate change, enabling resilience in markets and communities.
As a social enterprise, we provide insight to prevent the avoidable and manage the unpreventable in the era of climate change. We have been pioneers in the climate resilience field for over two decades. Our tools allow leaders to make resilient choices during our engagement and beyond, increasing social equity while mitigating risks.
The Climate Resilience Problem
Climate Resilience is required to curb the growing costs and human toll of climate change. Losses due to weather-related events have increased nearly ten-fold over the last 40 years, from a ten-year global average of USD 12 billion in 1980 to USD 119 billion today. And lower resourced communities face the greatest threats.
You can save lives, enhance livelihoods and save money in the face of climate disruption by measuring how climate change will affect you, strategizing how to adapt, and financing your initiatives, all while ensuring that social equity is fundamental to climate resilience
Our Focus is on Three Aspects
We work with you to prioritize your resources, enhance your investments, and build resilient institutions.
STRATEGY
Our strategy work focuses on equitable resilience success through transformative policy change, infrastructure improvements, and vibrant partnerships. Over a decade ago, we created one of the world’s first resilience strategies and we lead advisory groups, offer training, and perform research for strategy success.
FINANCE
To move from plans to action, communities need funding. We wrote the book on resilient infrastructure finance and work among stakeholders to address funding issues through targeting activities, policy development, resource allocation, and relationship-building.
MEASUREMENT
Sustainability tactics such as waste, water and carbon reduction fail to measure climate resilience on their own. We created the world’s first holistic measure of resilience, and our tools measure resilience, evaluate progress, and prepare for future scenarios with a special emphasis on justice.
OUR APPROACH
Apply Recent Research
Our projects bridge between science and real-world decision-making, producing solutions that are practical and actionable. Our founder Joyce Coffee established one of the world’s first climate adaptation strategies for the City of Chicago in 2008. She pioneered the world’s first resilience measurement system, leading the Global Adaptation Initiative. She is both a physical and social scientist who has helped bridge the gap between the latest scientific developments and real-world decision-making from Wall Street to Main Street. We have experience with corporate (engineering, communications, architecture), local and national government (in the US and in emerging economies in Asia), non-profit, and university sectors.
Craft Consensus for Future Forward Results
Our projects get internal and external buy-in, implementing complex initiatives with limited resources. We focus on now and later, deriving immediate benefits while mitigating future risks. Our founder is an appointed founding director of several international and national nonprofit boards including Alliance for Water Efficiency, American Society of Adaptation Professionals, Anthropocene Alliance and, throughout her career in the private, nonprofit, government and academic sectors, has been known for her future forward insights.
Emphasize Social Equity
Our projects ensure that social equity is fundamental to climate resilience, and we emphasize solutions that improve situations for those facing disproportionate risks to hazards. Since 2014 our founder has worked to address the disproportionate climate change risks faced by BIPOC and lower income communities. This has included a seminal review of the state of the climate adaptation field through a racial justice lens and spearheading financial initiatives for equitable climate resilience projects. We strive to uphold equity principles ourselves, as well as through our work. Across our commitments we work to transform mainstream systems that perpetuate inequities. By doing so, we hope to both center those who face inequitable climate risks and contribute to justice through climate resilience.
